It seems that as I look around my industry, the art of teaching golf has turned into a technology-based science project. So many of the younger teachers today would say that without a Trackman®, KVest®, HD video, or any number of other techno gadgets available today, a sound teaching session is not possible.

Now let me first say, I feel all of the above mentioned technology are powerful and useful tools in some teaching situations. However when the average recreational player comes to me I feel strongly that with my 36 years of experience and the occasional use of high speed video I can provide any player who graces my lesson tee with a game plan of success. I recently had a young instructor tell me that I was completely incapable of helping my students without a Trackman. Guess what my reply to this nice young man was?

I heard a story from a reliable source recently that a recent major champion has become so obsessed with Trackman that he felt he had to look at the numbers on the screen after EVERY shot during his practice sessions! AFTER EVERY SHOT! By the way, prior to winning his major, he had won many events around the globe without a Trackman. P.S. this player’s coach encourages the frequent use of Trackman.

I wonder if these young teachers have heard of Stewart Maiden (Jones), Jack Grout (Nicklaus), Harvey Penick (Mickey Wright, Crenshaw, Kite) and do they know these folks wouldn’t know a video camera if they tripped over it let alone a Trackman. Yet it seems they were able to develop a fair stable of somewhat talented players. Imagine that, these teachers with the naked eye, and a talented ability to communicate the nuances of the game of golf got the job done.

I salute the advent of the great technology available to all of us who teach and coach this great game today. I also say shame on the young teacher today who has failed to fully develop his “teaching eye” and coaching skill to its absolute fullest ahead of or at least alongside, what has become in many cases their teaching crutches! To all you young coaches, let me invite you to come from hiding behind your gadgets and use those wonderful gifts God gave you called a brain and eyes to compliment your toys.
