Not long ago, Patri came across a study by Golf Research Associates indicating that three-putting becomes an issue for pros starting at 30 feet. (For amateurs, he says, it’s 14 feet.) Francella tends to leave longer attempts short, as she prefers dying puffs into the hole; lately, she and Patri have worked on adding a bit more pace.
“We’ll sometimes put two tees down within a foot of each other about 30 feet away, so that one way it’s an uphill pull and the other way it’s downhill,” Francella says. “I’m trying to stop the ball in between the tees, but if not, I want it to go a little beyond the last tee.”
