Francella’s full swing bears a marked resemblance to Sorenstam’s in that she releases her head through impact in concert with her torso and arm swing. “It’s funny,” says Tom Patri, “but it happened way before we even knew what Annika did.”
When Francella’s arm swing and body aren’t in sequence, she tends to hang back on her right side and flip the club with her hands. “I’m a hang-and-flipper, Francella says. “My misses are left when I do that, and right when I get the club stuck behind me.”
To ingrain the feeling of getting through the ball and releasing the head and body, Patri has his student do what he calls the “post-up drill.” Francella repeatedly places her clubhead just ahead of the ball and swings through to a full finish (pictured).
“That drill has been really helpful,” she says. “It gets my eyes to follow my arms, which keeps my head moving with my arms.”
