Let each wrist do its job for pure pitching

Here’s the key to deadly accurate pitch shots—wrist action. Each wrist has an important role: The left cocks the club up, while the right hinges it to the inside (above). The proper blend of cocking and hinging helps you make crisp contact.

Most amateurs either dominate with the left wrist, which lifts the club too steeply, or hinge the club too much with the right, pulling it way inside. When you get your wrists working together, you’ll swing the club on the correct plane and pure your pitches.

Tom Patri pitch 2and3

Address a ball with your pitching wedge, then cock the club straight up. Feel how the left wrist controls this motion. Turn your shoulders back and hinge your right wrist until you’re holding the club at chest level. The club is now on plane.

DRILL: OVER THE BAG

The above exercise helps you feel a perfect backswing; now put it to work. Stand your golf bag at the edge of a practice green. Set up five paces from the bag and pitch some balls over it and onto the green. Concentrate on making a descending strike—with the right blend of cocking and hinging—to produce the loft you need.
