One thing that gets in the way of consistent performance around the greens is confusion. Which club should I use? Where should I play the ball in my stance? How long should the swing be? The game can be much more simple when you realize you can hit a whole bunch of different shots without changing clubs, ball position or much else for that matter. From a decent lie around the green you can play any shot you want with your pitching wedge. For each of the three shots described, simply play the ball in the middle of your stance and keep the clubface square at address.
- If there isn’t much green be tween you and the hole, finish the shot with the clubface facing toward the sky. The subtle motion you use to accomplish this will get the shot up in the air without much effort.
. - If you want some height on the shot, but want it to run some as well, finish the shot with the lead edge of the club pointing at the target. You’ll get moderate height, and a medium amount of run.
. - If you want the ball to stay low and run most of the way to the hole, finish the shot with the toe of the club pointed toward the sky.
.
To hit a higher, soft shot, finish with the clubface pointed toward the sky (1).
