Start your swing with the clubhead leaving late for longer, more consistent shots (Part 3, Conclusion)

Learning to lag

Tom Patri_Learning to lagHave a friend put his foot behind your club (as shown in the photograph) while holding your head steady. This prevents swaying to start the backswing, a common mistake golfers make when first trying to lag. Begin your swing: If you’re like most people, you’ll have trouble sliding the club over the shoe. Why? Excess tension in your arms and upper body.

.

Relax your wrists, elbows, arms, and shoulders and try again. This time, start your swing by turning your upper body first followed by your hands. Now the clubhead should slide easily over the shoe as the shoulders, hands, and clubhead form the correct lag angle. On the course, think of starting the swing by lagging the clubhead as long as possible.
