Tom Patri _ putting-chippingThe principal of balance is, I feel, extremely overlooked–almost ignored. With a hitting surface (the clubface) as small as it is in golf, as compared to tennis, and with the amount of speed we create in our swings, the ability to make centerface contact is directly linked and vital to the player’s ability to balance themselves during the motion itself. One thing you may want to do to evaluate your balance is make complete swings at nominal speeds with your eyes closed. If you are in perfect balance at the completion of each motion, go for it! If not, you may want to work on the tempo of your golf swing.

Good balance often begins with proper footwork. Can you picture a good dancer with bad footwork … I think not! When you reach both the top of your backswing, as well as impact, I like my students to be solid on both feet. I feel this enables the players to both load and store energy with maximum efficiency as well as deliver the most solid blow to the ball. Only after impact do you begin to leave your right foot as a result of your hips pivoting through impact into the follow-through condition.
