The golf ball isn’t going to hurt you. Yet many amateurs act as if they are afraid of it and stand to far away at address. They then have to bend too much from the waist and over-reach with the arms, which causes the club to start back too far to the inside and under the correct swing plane. This faulty takeaway requires downswing compensations­-like swinging over the top-that rarely work.

Establishing the correct distance from the ball will allow you to start the club straight back and on the proper plane. Do that, and your chances of making a good swing increase dramatically.

POSTURE: A LITTLE DOES IT

The primary indicator that you’re standing too far from the ball is poor posture: too much knee flex coupled with too much hip bend. In a proper address position, there should be very little knee flex, no more than if you were standing casually while holding a conversation. Bend just enough from the hips so your arms hang straight down in front of your body with room to swing. This basic posture remains the same for all clubs; the club’s length will determine how far you stand from the ball.
