PERFECT YOUR SAND DIVOTS:
.
I recommend that you practice taking “sand divots” without a ball. For an average-length bunker shot (40 to 50 feet), you should slice out a divot that’s about as long as a hot dog and as deep as a wallet. The depth is important—you don’t want to dig in too deeply or else the club’s momentum will be stopped. Keep the blade open and keep the clubhead moving by taking a relatively shallow divot as described. Once you’re taking correct-sized divots, put a ball down and make the same swing, with the flange contacting the sand two to three inches behind the ball. It’s like learning to ride a bicycle—keep repeating it and in no time you’ll be getting every ball out and onto the green.
