We have all had a few weeks to digest both the play/outcome at The Ryder Cup as it relates to our American Team as well as the fire storm that ensued after Phil decided to air it out publicly in front of the world.
There are a few view points and certainly a bevy of opinions about who is right, who is wrong. Was Watson
a good or bad Captain? Was Watson out of touch with the younger players? Was Watson the wrong choice made by The PGA of America? Was Phil correct in his assessment? Was Phil just annoyed Watson sat him down during day 2 of the matches? We could go on forever.
Now we have the creation of a “Ryder Cup, Task Force” to try to over-analyze and micro manage the short comings of the last few American losses … REALLY? A task force? Has this thing, this international competition, this one time vehicle of good will made a wrong turn somewhere? YES, I want to win the cup, but at what cost? At the cost of an American golf icon, namely Tom Watson, being raked across the coals publicly because Phil had his ego bruised when Capt. Watson sat his ass down on day two!?
How many spoiled little brats will it take for The PGA of America to simply say we chose the Captain right or wrong, you the player are bestowed the honor of representing your country. Please do so with class, respect, and dignity! Coaches and Captains are human! Guess what humans make errors in judgment! Phil have you ever made an error? Does number 18 at Winged Foot ring a bell?
It’s a damn shame that for all the fantastic good Tom Watson has done during his career in golf that one large mouth can tarnish his image in 5 minutes because someone gave him a microphone. Teammates and coaching staffs that understand athletics know you air out you most heated feelings in private, behind closed doors. When you’re done, you look the other guy in the eye, shake his hand and move on.
God Bless Tom Watson. Phil you’re a wonderful talent. Please put 15 second delay on the operation of your mouth. Allow time for your brain to think through the consequences of how your comments will affect all involved as well as the good of the game and its traditions … One final word – RESPECT!?
