When confronted with this shot (4), you have no choice but to hit to safety. You have to put your ego in your back pocket, because you’re not going anywhere. The grass will grab and choke the clubface so quickly that the club will feel as if it’s running into a brick wall (5).
Again, do not take a long club and try to power the ball out. Punch the ball to a diagonal target on the fairway that gives you the widest margin of error. As with the basic recovery shot, you will want to maximize the loft of the club and preset the clubface a little more open. Other keys:

- Apply even more pressure in the left hand;
- Make an abbreviated follow-through, holding the clubface down the target line (6);
- Choke down on the grip for more control;
- Make the angle of attack steeper.
