Wow!! The 97th PGA from the shores of a lake that looks like an ocean provided both drama and enough story lines to write a fair sized book.
Rory showed up and played well despite the fact he wasn’t and could not be as well prepared as he might have liked to have been. Rory will recover, he will get healthy again and he will win more Majors. Although he will have to battle so many more talented young players much like himself. Spieth, Fowler, Thomas, Grace, Rose, Johnson & Johnson, Finau, Watson, Horschel, Reed, and Matzuyama to name just a few! The depth of the talent worldwide never ceases to completely amaze me!
What more can we dare to say about the year Jordan Spieth has in fact had. This extremely talented youngster has manage a combined 53 under par in Majors this year. 53 UNDER?! 53 UNDER IN MAJORS!! Wow, did you ever think what if! One shot out of the playoff at St. Andrews, then missed his 3rd Major here at The PGA Championship. If not for the slightest of factors, Spieth could have easily won The Grand Slam and this year’s Majors. The Spieth Factor/2015 will be written about and discussed among experts for decades not day to come. All that said, Spieth leaves The PGA Championship as a runner-up, but also as the #1 Player on the planet!
And then there is Jason Day. That’s the same Day that lost his Dad at age 12. That’s the same Day that came extremely close to finding his way to the wrong side of the tracks in his early life. So many close calls, one after another. Well no close call this time! The Wanamaker is all shiny and has a place at The Day house. I’m sure it will be proudly displayed and rightfully so!! I believe Day is the type of guy that now that he has won that first Major he should win 5 MORE! It wouldn’t surprise me one bit.
What now, is the question! What happens next? Who becomes the bad guy? Who becomes the White Night? I certainly hope we see 20 years of Jordan, Rory, Jason, and Fowler battling it out! Golf is very very healthy post The Tiger Era. I think we are heading into what will prove to be an incredible era of fantastic golf!
A few comments….
- The PGA heads back east to Baltusrol in Springfield NJ
- Whistling Straits proved a wonderful backdrop but without a daily stiff breeze it surrendered a Major Championship scoring record….
- Brain Gaffney, The PGA Head Professional at Quaker Ridge in Scarsdale NY was one of 20 Club Professionals who were in the field starting Thursday. The difference was when the smoke cleared on Sunday afternoon Brian was the only club pro still standing! Brian you did all of your fellow PGA Members proud!
