I have been giving today’s topic a great deal of thought lately . Given above average talent
which 6″ is more important to playing championship golf . The 3″ either side of impact or the
6″ between a players ears ?
We have seen many incredibly unusual swings win world class events . Jim Furyk , Raymond
Floyd , Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey , Chi Chi , Doug Sanders , and recently Mr. Jimenez from
Spain . The list goes on forever .
The one common denominator that all these unique but highly effective swings have in
common not only with each other but with any effective championship motion is the 3″ pre
and post impact . These players are able to get the face into a square impact position with a
forward leaning club shaft and compress the dimpled monster .
Many however would argue the ability of a player whose goal is to compete on the world
stage has not a chance in hell without an ability to remain in full and clear control of ones
mind while the stress level of championship golf tightens the noose around a players neck !
A young Bobby Jones failed terribly early on when his temper made him a useless competitor .
It was only when he learned to control his inner self he transformed himself from just
another field filler to the best player on the planet ! Would anyone dispute that the great
Jack Nicklaus from a mechanical standpoint was a second rate swinger compared to the
graceful and powerful motion of young Tom Weiskopf . All that said Jack chewed up and spit
out Weiskopf time and time again .
Jack had had an uncanny ability to out think , out focus , and remain as calm as a cucumber
while the world around him was erupting under immense pressure . Jack accomplished this
and hit world class shots and holed miles of clutch putts in golfs pressure cooker over and
over again !
So I will leave the decision to each of you who has stood over a downhill left to right 3 footer
to win a $2 dollar nassau with your pals on Saturday morning .
On the other hand the fact that the fundamentals of putting stroke are less then pristine ….
Well which will have a greater impact on the outcome ? You tell me.
I certainly have my own opinion .
6″ did you ever realize that every inch in golf is a mile ?
